A Legacy Built Over 30 Years
KRAX Paving carries more than three decades of experience through the acquisition and evolution of SPI Asphalt. By purchasing the company, renaming it, and keeping the original operations experts at the helm, KRAX honors the work that built the foundation while positioning the business for growth. The team’s long-standing expertise in concrete, asphalt, and paving services continues to guide the company forward.
A vision for the future
Katie Armstrong and Ragen Martinek wanted to build a hands-on business rooted in a trade that would remain strong regardless of advances in AI and technology. They saw significant opportunity in the construction space, especially as a women-owned business. Katie had already built a strong professional relationship with Tony Hogan, owner of SPI Asphalt and Trip Hopper Cattle Feeders.
Ragen brought years of experience in construction, development, and building industries, making the acquisition a natural fit with his existing projects. The ability to pair his operational and development expertise with a proven paving company strengthened the vision even further. When Katie and Ragen began exploring the idea and Katie brought it to Tony, it aligned perfectly with the direction Tony and his son were hoping to take, making the transition seamless for everyone involved.
Where it all began
SPI Asphalt was founded 30 years ago through the hard work and determination of Tony and his wife, Danko. They took on early striping jobs, quickly learning the skills needed to complete each project with quality and integrity. Their dedication supported their family and sparked their son Andy’s interest in the business. Andy eventually took over operations, thriving in the day-to-day work of job sites, bidding, and keeping the company moving.
